How to Setup Packaging Artwork: Print File Checklist

01Mandatory

Color Mode

Use CMYK only; convert all RGB elements to avoid color shifting. Digital screens render in RGB, whereas industrial offset and flexographic presses print Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key Black.

Rule: Profile to FOGRA39 (Coated) or GRACoL2006.
02300 DPI Min

Resolution

Minimum 300 DPI at actual physical print dimensions (100% scale). Web images (72 DPI) will result in pixelation, blurred barcodes, and soft package branding.

Rule: Do not upscale 72 DPI graphics artificially.
03Vector Preferred

File Formats

Submit editable vector formats (.AI, .PDF, or .EPS) with embedded fonts or packaged assets. Layered files allow pre-press technicians to adjust spot separations cleanly.

Rule: Export as PDF/X-1a:2001 or PDF/X-4.
04Convert to Curves

Typography

Outline all fonts (Create Outlines: Ctrl+Shift+O / Cmd+Shift+O) so text never defaults to fallback system fonts on our RIP processors.

Rule: Keep minimum body copy size at 6pt or larger.
053mm Standard

Bleed & Margins

Extend all background artwork by 3mm for the Bleed Area past the cut line, and keep critical logos, barcodes, and text 3mm inside the Safe Zone to allow mechanical tolerance.

Rule: Prevents unprinted white hairline borders.
06K: 100% Only

Barcodes & Fine Text

Set barcode bars, nutritional tables, and sub-10pt body text to 100% Black (K: 100%, C:0% M:0% Y:0%) to prevent registration shift blurring and point-of-sale scanner failure.

Rule: Never use Rich Black for fine copy or EAN-13.
07Layer Separation

Dielines & Finishes

Never alter or flatten the factory dieline layer. Place special finishes (Spot UV, Foil Stamping, Emboss/Deboss) on separate, clearly labeled spot-color vector layers.

Rule: Keep dieline on dedicated non-printing stroke.
08Embed Assets

Images & Asset Links

Ensure all raster images are fully embedded, not linked, to prevent missing asset errors during Computer-to-Plate (CTP) laser imaging and flexo plate production.

Rule:Links palette > Embed Images in Illustrator.

Special Finishes Layer Setup

Special tactile enhancements must be delivered on separate, non-overlapping vector layers above the artwork layer.

Spot UV Layer: [SPOT_UV]
Define as 100% Magenta Spot Color named "Spot UV", set stroke/fill to Overprint.
Foil Stamping: [FOIL_GOLD/SILVER]
Vector line art only. Minimum stroke weight: 0.5pt. Keep text above 8pt to prevent foil bridging.
Embossing / Debossing: [EMBOSS]
Dedicated vector path layer. Avoid overlapping fine micro-type directly on box creases.

Common Artwork Pitfalls & How to Avoid Them

Color Space: RGB vs CMYK Shift
Fault #1
RGB Monitor
Unprintable luminous gamut
CMYK Press
Calibrated physical ink mix

Monitors emit luminous RGB light, whereas industrial offset and flexographic packaging presses apply subtractive CMYK inks. Submitting RGB artwork produces drastic desaturation across brand hues.

Pre-Press Solution: Set document colour mode to CMYK in Illustrator or InDesign before selecting brand swatches.
Image Quality: 72 DPI vs 300 DPI
Fault #2
72 DPI Web Image
Fuzzy, jagged pixel artifacts
300 DPI Print Asset
Razor-sharp line and tone

Screenshots and web graphics compress visual detail into low density. On industrial corrugated or virgin SBS board, low resolutions show jagged edges, blurred barcodes, and faded halftone screens.

Pre-Press Solution: Supply uncompressed TIFF or vector SVG/PDF files scaled to 100% physical dieline size at 300 DPI.
Typography: Live Text vs Outlined Text
Fault #3
Aa
Live / Editable Text
Font must be embedded or available
A
Vector Outlines
Font-independent vector geometry

If brand typography is left as live text without the required fonts embedded, production systems may substitute missing fonts, altering kerning, line heights, and brand styling.

Pre-Press Solution: Select all text > Type > Create Outlines ( Ctrl+Shift+O / Cmd+Shift+O) prior to final PDF export.
Die-Cutting: Missing 3mm Bleed
Fault #4
Trimmed No Bleed
Unwanted white edge slivers
3mm Bleed Applied
Edge-to-edge solid colour

Packaging die-cutters move at thousands of impressions per hour with high mechanical precision (±0.5mm tolerance). Without 3mm outer bleed, minor shift tolerances expose bare cardboard edges.

Pre-Press Solution: Pull background fills and flood inks at least 3mm past the red dieline cut line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

What if I do not know how to convert RGB to CMYK?

No problem at all. Submit your artwork in whichever color mode you have. Our UK pre-press specialists will run a calibrated automated CMYK color-conversion curve and supply side-by-side digital proofs showing any potential hue changes before press plates are manufactured.
Q

Can your designers assist with our artwork layout?

Yes! We provide complimentary design assistance for basic packaging setups. Simply send us your vector logo, brand colour hex codes, and typography requirements. We will correctly arrange your brand assets on the certified dieline template and supply interactive 3D proofs.
Q

What is the turnaround time for a 3D digital proof?

Standard 2D and 3D digital packaging proofs are turned around within 2 to 4 working hours during regular UK business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30am - 5:30pm GMT). Expedited rush checks are available on high-priority production timelines.
Q

How do I specify Pantone (PMS) spot colors?

If your brand uses Pantone Matching System (PMS) solid colors, specify the exact code (e.g., Pantone 286 C) directly in your vector swatch list. Our offset and flexo presses calibrate spot ink formulations using computerized spectrophotometers for 100% chromatic accuracy.
